We’re breaking new ground which makes working here exciting, it provides autonomy, opportunity and makes the things you do visible. Come and join us and see what you’re capable of.

About the Role

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join CMR Surgical and help us build the data platforms, services, and infrastructure that enable more patients to benefit from minimal access surgery using the Versius Surgical System.

You'll join our Data department, working with telemetry streaming from hundreds of surgical systems worldwide. We build the systems that turn this data into something useful — from event-driven pipelines and backend services to APIs, data platforms, and cloud infrastructure. Our stack is primarily Python and AWS, with a predominantly serverless microservices architecture, databases, data lakes, and streaming technologies supporting digital products, operational insights, and AI research.

A big part of the challenge is evolving what we've already built. As our products and customers' needs grow, we need to make our systems simpler, more reliable, easier to change, and ready for what comes next.

We're also in the middle of rethinking how we build software — moving toward AI-native engineering practices, not just new tools but a real change in how the work gets done. We don't have this fully figured out, and we're honest about that; we're looking for someone who's genuinely up for figuring it out with us.

This is a hybrid role, with a minimum of 1 day per week in our Cambridge office, plus additional time on-site when needed.

Responsibilities

  • Set technical direction and evolve our architecture. Take ownership of existing services, understand their responsibilities, and identify opportunities to simplify, consolidate, or redesign them.
  • Lead changes from problem definition through delivery and operation, making pragmatic decisions that help us serve customers better, support new capabilities, and scale.
  • Build and operate cloud-native services and data pipelines, primarily using Python and AWS, working with event-driven architectures, serverless technologies, databases, and Infrastructure-as-Code.
  • Improve how we deliver software safely and efficiently, evolving our testing, deployment, and observability practices to increase confidence in changes while reducing unnecessary complexity and waste.
  • Help shape our move towards AI-native engineering, experimenting with how AI can fundamentally improve how we design, build, test, and maintain software.
  • Collaborate across the business, working with Product, R&D, Clinical, Commercial, and other engineering teams to understand real-world problems and turn them into effective technical solutions.
  • Raise the team's engineering capability through mentoring, pairing, constructive feedback, and promoting pragmatic engineering practices.

We’d expect you to be willing to turn your hand to anything within the Data Team that helps the team deliver its objectives.

About you

  • Strong software engineering experience, particularly designing, building, and operating backend services, APIs, and data processing pipelines.
  • Proficient in Python, our primary programming language.
  • Experience with event-driven, streaming, or asynchronous architectures, and an understanding of the trade-offs involved.
  • Experience building cloud-native systems, ideally on AWS, including Infrastructure-as-Code and serverless technologies.
  • Comfortable working with existing systems, understanding their architecture, questioning assumptions, and making pragmatic improvements rather than always starting from scratch.
  • Able to navigate ambiguity, take ownership of technical decisions, and balance engineering quality with delivering meaningful outcomes.
  • Experience using AI coding tools to genuinely change how you work is a strong plus; if you've helped others adopt them too, even better.
  • Clear communicator, comfortable collaborating with technical and non-technical stakeholders, explaining trade-offs, and building alignment.
  • Enjoys coaching, mentoring, and sharing knowledge.
  • Excited by building software that has a real impact on patients.

At CMR Surgical, we’re building a diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace. You don’t need to meet every requirement to apply — what matters most is that you identify with our values, bring a positive attitude, and are motivated to learn, lead, and make a difference.
