HSS Advisor

We’re looking for an experienced HSS Advisor to join our Team based In Cambridge. The HSS Advisor will focus on the implementation and delivery of the HSE strategy ensuring organsiational objectives are achieved. Responsible for the management of HSE systems, processes and policies, the HSE Advisor will work closely with functional heads of departments to ensure the required standards are achieved whilst maintaining a positive HSE culture.

This role is offered on a hybrid basis, with a minimum of 3 days a week based across our Ely and Cambridge sites.

Specific Role & Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate the workplace environment and develop safety-management policies and procedures that identify and define the safety responsibilities of all employees (reviewing and updating where necessary)
  • Define HSE procedures in conjunction with operating staff.
  • Develop and implement organisational safety programs (training/ increased awareness)
  • Establish and maintain controls and documentation procedures; to achieve a positive HSE culture.
  • Conduct risk assessments to detect potential hazards and plan precautionary measures.
  • Perform day-to-day workplace inspections, report, and record findings in the HSE action log and ensure close-out is obtained.
  • Ensure that manufacturing and production processes meet the required safety and environmental standards.
  • Ensure that workplace tools and equipment meet industry standards and are installed properly, as defined by the relevant Occupational Health and Safety Laws and Regulations.
  • Continually maintain an appropriate level of awareness, knowledge, and preparedness across the organisation
  • Coordinate training programs for all employees and conduct HSE inductions for all new employees, visitors, and sub-contractors.
  • Support the investigations of hazards, near misses and incidents, to assist in establishing the route cause and help develop recommendations to preventive action against a recurrence and present findings to all the teams.
  • Review subcontractors’ and visitors’ requirements, with associated risk assessments and ensuring they are complied with.
  • Prepare HSE documentation and statistical reports by collating data for analysis; summarise information and review trends (including risk assessments, processes, stability studies, corrective actions, and re-validations)
  • Present suggestions for changes/improvements and how to implement them continuously improve.
  • Use relevant HSE tools and make sure managers and other staff members understand how to improve the business requirements in relation to HSE and drive cultural change.
  • Enforce HSE policies and procedures throughout the business.

We’d expect you to be willing to turn your hand to anything within the Health Safety and Sustainability remit that helps the team deliver its objectives.

About you

To be successful in this role, you’ll need to have/be:

Knowledge and Skills required:

  • Demonstrable experience in health a safety position across multi-site organisations.
  • Good working knowledge of health safety and environmental management systems and current legislation & best practice.
  • Coached/mentored staff.
  • Excellent “customer” facing skills e.g., influencing, negotiation and problem solving.
  • Research skills backed up by effective and practical written procedures.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement
  • Pragmatic and a motivated self-starter

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Certificate in Health and Safety
  • Membership of recognised industry body
