Head of Electronics

This role is ideal for an Electronics Engineer with leadership experience or an established Electronics Leader who is looking to scale their leadership scope and impact. In this role you will define the organisation and processes for Electronics Engineering at CMR. You will be a key stakeholder in setting, refining and executing our product roadmap across both near term and longer term horizons. In this role, your contributions will be highly visible, shaping technology that directly impacts patient outcomes

The opportunity

At CMR, our mission is to transform surgery for millions of patients worldwide. As Head of Electronics, you’ll have ownership of strategic function at CMR. In this highly visible role, you will be making critical design decisions on our disruptive surgical robotic platform. You’ll combine hands-on technical expertise with inspirational leadership, mentoring colleagues and helping to guide the future direction of our electronics capability.

What you’ll do

  • Lead the Electronics function at CMR, including line management for a team of highly capable engineers. Working with the Head of System Development, to ensure the Electronics team’s organisation design and processes are optimised to deliver an ambitious product roadmap.
  • Develop, refine and own robust development practices that ensure consistent, reliable and high-quality compliant outputs, drawing on your previous experience.
  • ?Collaborate with leaders and colleagues in mechanical, software, systems, test, manufacturing and supply chain to evolve the system architecture and deliver well integrated modular solutions.
  • Lead and contribute to the design and development of electronic subsystems across power, digital, analogue, programmable logic and RF technologies.
  • Mentor and coach electronics engineers, from junior to senior level, providing guidance on design practices, problem-solving, technical reviews and personal development.
  • Provide technical oversight and review of relevant design artefacts, for example  PCB, cable assembly and power system designs to ensure robustness, reliability and compliance.
  • Review technical documents, including specifications and test plans, that form part of the medical device technical file.
  • Champion improvements to ways of working, lab facilities, equipment and tools to ensure the electronics team has the resources needed to deliver effectively.
  • Support recruitment, training, and retention of electronics engineers to support company growth and the function’s needs.

What we’re looking for

Essential technical expertise

  • Broad foundation in electronics design with working knowledge of the majority of:
    • Motor drive circuits (1–100 A)
    • Low-voltage power supplies (1 V – 240 V, 500 mW – 1 kW)
    • FPGA designs (25–500 MHz)
    • Analogue sensor interfaces (?V to mV)
    • High-speed communications (up to 10 Gbit/s)
    • Embedded microprocessors and control systems
  • Strong experience of delivering Electronics to market within Medical Devices (i.e. ISO13485 and IEC60601 and similar standards and directives)
  • Full lifecycle experience from concept to transfer to manufacture
  • Experience establishing DFx principles, and owning collaborations electronics partners including contract design, test and manufacturers.

Leadership & collaboration

  • Demonstrated experience of mentoring and leading engineers in a cross-discipline environment.
  • Skilled at building collaborative relationships across internal departments and with external partners.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to adapt style for diverse audiences and perspectives.
  • Enthusiasm for developing people and fostering an inclusive team environment.
  • Able to champion process improvements and drive positive change.

Qualifications & experience

  • Degree or comparable experience in Electronics Engineering.
  • Experience leading electronics projects and/or functions within a wider multi-disciplinary programme.
  • Experience in medical devices – working understanding of 60601 as a minimum
  • Experience from high-reliability sectors (telecoms, defence, industrial automation) also welcome.
